The Jura Mountains in Nordic skiing

A mountain area with a strong identity, integrated into the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park, the Hautes Combes have something different! A relief made up of small valleys that offer a wide variety of landscapes and a real change of scenery! It is also a high-quality Nordic area, as fun as you want, ideal for learning off-piste ski touring. We have deliberately planned reasonable days to allow us to take our time.

Sunday: Meet at 17:30 p.m. in Les Rousses for those arriving by car OR at 17:20 p.m. in front of the CFF train station in La Cure (located 3 km from Les Rousses).
Ski rental for those who wish. Settle into the lodge for the evening.

Monday: Combe à la Chèvre Starting from Lajoux, the highest village in the massif and headquarters of the Maison du Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura, we go through pastures and meadows, discovering gentle landscapes dotted with farms. We climb quietly into the Combe à la Chèvre, to the Ferme de la Regarde, at the gateway to the famous Massacre forest, renowned for its harsh climate and a refuge for the emblematic capercaillie.
Length: 13 km Elevation gain: 300 m Timetable: 5:00 a.m. Tuesday: the Vaudois Jura Park We cross the Swiss border directly on skis from the lodge (or after a short transfer to the Balancier). Like smugglers, we climb up to the Givrine mountain pastures and perhaps push on to the Genolière refreshment bar or the Rochefort cabin to catch a glimpse of the Alps!
Length: 15 km Elevation gain: 450 m Time: 6:00 a.m. Wednesday: La Greffière Having barely left the old royal road that linked Paris to Geneva, we are immersed in the Nordic atmosphere above the La Greffière farm. We play border hopping in the silent immensity, the old trees twisted by the elements and the possibility of climbing to the Col de la Grande Grand sous la Dôle to admire the Alps. A long descent on the way back rewards us for our efforts.
Length: 13 km Elevation gain: 400 m Time: 5 hours Thursday: Les Hautes Combes We head south by vehicle to begin our hike at La Simard, among the most beautiful landscapes of the Haut-Jura and the land of Bleu de Gex. We go up to Platières where all the small lodges, isolated in winter, are renovated. We cross Bellecombe, the aptly named, with its scattered and undulating habitat.
Length: 13 km Elevation gain: 300 m Timetable: 5:00 a.m. Friday: Les Grandes Chaumilles We reach the Col de Marchairuz by minibus, to enjoy the highest open spaces of the Swiss Jura. Here too, farms punctuate the meadow-wooded landscape, under the foothills of Mont Tendre.
Length: 13 km Elevation gain: 350 m Time: 5H30 We may sometimes have to modify the indicated itinerary slightly: either at the organizational level (problem of overcrowding of accommodation, splitting of groups, change in the state of the terrain, snow conditions, etc.), or directly due to the guide (weather, level of the group, etc.). Trust us, these changes are always made in your interest, for your safety and greater comfort.

FORMALITIES: Valid identity card or passport if you are coming by train (passing through Switzerland).

SNOW: Winter hiking is changing! Some seasons, the snow is perfect and you can really enjoy yourself. Others, it is partial and requires adjustments to the program to stay in areas with good snow. And we are not immune to a period without snow... but the accommodations are booked and we cannot cancel without charge. So, if there is no snow, we will still ensure the departure of the stays. The winter atmosphere and light will be there and we will offer you other activities such as biathlon shooting or off-trail hiking.

LEVEL: Technical level 2 out of 4: Introduction to Nordic skiing (off-track) accessible to any non-beginner skier, with at least a little experience, already mastering the basic techniques of cross-country skiing (in particular the snowplough technique, sliding walking, a so-called duck climbing technique for example, etc.) and being in good physical condition.
Physical level 3 out of 5: 5 hours of skiing per day. Off-piste skiing (except for a few connecting routes). An average of 14 km per day, low elevation 300 to 500m/day. Group of 8 people max. As a general rule, we leave the lodge around 9 a.m. and return around 17 p.m. Adaptable of course according to our desires of the moment, the weather, etc. ACCOMMODATION: 5 nights in a stopover and holiday gîte in Prémanon, shared room (4 to 5 people) in a warm atmosphere, shared bathrooms. The cottage is located 800 m from the parking lot.
Bedding is provided (sheets and blanket), you must bring a towel.

MEALS: Full board. Dinners are an opportunity to taste local specialties: "hot box", röstis, sausages... while maintaining varied and balanced menus (we ensure this throughout the week). Breakfasts are adapted to hiking. Picnics are generous and come with a hot drink. If the temperature is low, your guide will do their best to find shelter (chalet or cabin) so that you can enjoy your meal and lunch break.

Groups consist of 4 to 8 people only.

SUPERVISION: Murielle, Yohann or Eric, state-qualified Nordic ski instructors, fine technicians and full of love for the Jura!

EQUIPMENT: the supply of equipment is not included in the hiking package. You must be equipped with recent Nordic hiking equipment. This equipment differs from cross-country skiing equipment. The ski is wider with metal edges, like alpine skis, but with scales. The fastening system involves a heel that is always released. The ideal is to take a ski that is not too big, the size of the skier or 5/10cm less, more manageable off-piste and a pair of poles with a basket wide enough to carry in fresh snow.
Our team of ski instructors has created an association to purchase the most suitable equipment for this trip, which they rent to participants. We also have a partnership with several sports stores in the Rousses resort to complete this. Expect to pay around €90 for a week's rental (skis, boots, poles). Rental is payable on site, but it is best to let us know your height and shoe size so that we can reserve the equipment. The instructor provides skins if they are useful depending on the terrain or the snow conditions."
