The Maquisards' Belvedere

Les Rousses.

A bit of history: The Battle of Turu: at the end of August 1944, a convoy of German soldiers hardened by five years of conflict climbed the RN5 from Morez as reinforcements to defend Fort des Rousses, besieged by resistance fighters. Arriving a little before the Turu, the convoy was violently machine-gunned from two points: the Berthole, a high terrace located 400m as the crow flies, held by the resistance fighters of the CAMBRONNE section, and the Roche, which would later be called the Maquisards' belvedere, 800m away, by the ROBERT section. Both groups are part of the CYRUS camps. Their action aimed to prevent the convoy from attacking their friends from behind, who at that very moment were storming Fort des Rousses. The Germans retaliated, trucks exploded and the shooting lasted all day. Around 17 p.m., a young resistance fighter, Hugues Bassano, nicknamed Zato, was hit by a bullet fragment and died shortly after. A stele honors his memory.

Access and hiking: The belvedere is located next to the D25 road which connects Prémanon to Morez.
