It is one of the highest peaks in the French Jura. It is surrounded by several peat bogs rich in flora and fauna. The water from Lac des Rousses supplies many surrounding communities with drinking water.
This lake also has a nautical base and offers boat rentals, sailing lessons, etc.

Redevelopments to the site were carried out in 2009, providing: a picnic area with tables, a pétanque court, grassy terraces located near the restaurant, a small square in stabilized sand equipped with bicycle parking.
The new nautical building is also the starting point for the pedestrian trail that leads to the remarkable natural site of the lake rock. A 450-meter-long wooden deck was built to allow hikers to cross the peat bog in peace without damaging the fragile environment. The public also has toilets located under the Chalet du Lac restaurant, as well as an outdoor shower and a water point.

Des réaménagements sur le site ont été effectués en 2009, proposant ainsi : une aire de pique-nique aménagée avec tables, un terrain de pétanque, des terrasses engazonnées situées à proximité du restaurant, une placette en sable stabilisé équipée de parking à vélos.
Le nouveau bâtiment nautique est aussi le point de départ du sentier piétonnier qui rejoint le site naturel remarquable du rocher du lac. Un platelage en bois d'une longueur de 450 m a été réalisé afin de permettre aux randonneurs de traverser la tourbière en toute tranquillité sans endommager l'environnement fragile. Le public dispose également de toilettes qui sont situées sous le restaurant du Chalet du lac, ainsi que d'une douche extérieure et d'un point d'eau.
